A una ottantina di chilometri a ovest di Socorro, nel Nuovo Messico, ci sono 27 enormi parabole con un diametro di 25 metri puntate verso il cielo. Sono allineate lungo tre bracci che formano una Y e vengono utilizzate per studiare lo spazio. Grazie a questo complesso, che si trova su un pianoro a 2100 metri sopra il livello del mare, gli astrofisici hanno approfondito le loro conoscenze sulle galassie, sulle quasar, le pulsar, le supernove, i pianeti, il Sole, i buchi neri e su altre cose interessanti – ma meno affascinanti come gas e polveri – che costituiscono la Via Lattea.
Questo insieme di radiotelescopi fu costruito a partire dai primi anni Settanta e fu nominato molto pragmaticamente: Very Large Array, ovvero “schieramento molto ampio”, VLA per gli amici. Un gran bel progetto con un nome banale, che nel corso del tempo non ha contribuito molto alla fama dell’iniziativa astronomica.
A distanza di 31 anni dall’inaugurazione del complesso, che nel frattempo è stato potenziato con nuove tecnologie, quelli del VLA hanno deciso di trovare un nuovo nome e di affidarsi alle proposte degli appassionati o di chi si ritrova per caso sul loro sito web. Per inviare una proposta basta compilare questo modulo, inserendo la propria email e il nuovo nome. C’è tempo fino al primo dicembre, poi il 10 gennaio 2012 il National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) comunicherà il nome vincitore.
