Se vi capita di starnutire ogni volta che un felino incrocia la vostra strada, rassegnatevi. Non è una corrente d’aria, ma rientrate in quel miliardo e mezzo di persone che soffrono di allergie respiratorie, ma non necessariamente legate ai felini!
Dopo un meticoloso studio, applicato su un campione di oltre 2000 volontari in tutta Europa, un gruppo di ricercatori dell’Imperial College di Londra ha emesso il proprio verdetto: gli allergeni di cui sono portatori i gatti sono in grado di influenzare negativamente la salute del 25% della popolazione, con una intensità molto superiore a quella fino ad ora stimata in ambiente medico.
"Le persone devono essere consapevoli della pericolosità dei gatti, – ha confidato Susan Chinn, responsabile del progetto di ricerca al Guardian – decidere di tenere un felino in casa è una scelta da prendere con moltissima cautela".
Il team della dottoressa Chinn ha collezionato campioni di polvere dalle case di circa 2000 volontari europei, distribuiti su tutto il Continente. L’analisi dei dati raccolti ha rivelato che un volontario su quattro soffre almeno di un tipo di allergia. Inoltre, il test ha dimostrato la diretta proporzionalità tra la concentrazione di allergeni felini nella polvere e la gravità delle disfunzioni respiratorie delle persone allergiche.
Ma il dato di questa ricerca che sorprende di più è un altro. Tutte le persone del campione rivelatesi allergiche soffrono di attacchi d’asma se esposte agli allergeni dei gatti, anche se i loro test del sangue sono negativi all’allergia da felini. Gli allergeni presenti nella pelliccia dei nostri pelosi amici sono dunque in grado di peggiorare e acuire le più comuni allergie respiratorie, con inaspettate ricadute sulla salute e sulla qualità della vita di un quarto della popolazione.
È ancora presto per trarre conclusioni definitive sulle reazioni allergiche causate, o aggravate, dai gatti. Tuttavia, i ricercatori sono convinti che milioni di persone inconsapevolmente allergiche, potrebbero trarre importanti benefici riducendo la loro esposizione agli allergeni dei felini. Ma in quanti rinuncerebbero alla dose quotidiana di coccole al loro micio domestico?

Sarebbe a dire che adesso che in famiglia diventiamo quattro, non potró piú avere gatti. Mia moglie non apprezzerá, comunque se la ricerca si estendesse a paesi dove l’aria é migliore, scommetto che le percentuali diminuirebbero drasticamente.
