Qualcuno di voi forse ricorderà il mio post di alcune settimane fa sull’inquietante accolita di germi, batteri e ricordini organici presenti sulle maniglie dei carrelli della spesa. Quella ricerca aveva dimostrato quanto pochissime persone fossero propense a seguire alcune semplici, ma basilari, regole per una corretta igiene personale.
Avrei potuto incentivare la vostra fuga dal mio blog con una bella rampogna su cosa fare, e non fare, per mantenere la vostra igiene. Ma, partendo dal presupposto che on-line non potrete mai contaminarvi a vicenda, ho deciso di sciorinare qualche curiosità sul tema in una miscellanea sragionata in pieno stile CattivaMaestra.

Hygieia_2La parola "igiene" deriva dagli antichi greci. Hygieia, infatti, era la dea greca della salute, della pulizia e della Luna. Cosa c’entrasse il nostro satellite naturale con l’igiene resta un mistero, ma forse Hygieia arrotondava con un doppio lavoro…
La casa migliore per i batteri non è una toilette pubblica, ma il nostro organismo. Siamo un vero e proprio camper per batteri, ne ospitiamo un migliaio di specie differenti che nascono, vivono e si nutrono a spese nostre. Ci sono più germi nel nostro corpo che abitanti negli Stati Uniti d’America, ospitiamo circa 300 milioni di inquilini che, fortunatamente, non esigono regolari riunioni di condominio.

Sapone Una recente ricerca, pubblicata sulla rivista Clinical Infectious Diseases (il nome è tutto un programma), ha dimostrato che il sapone antibatterico ha le stesse identiche capacità del sapone normale nel prevenire le infezioni… costa solo qualche Euro in più.

Telecomando Nonostante l’esponenziale aumento di pulizia e igiene, ancora oggi il posto migliore per ammalarsi pare essere l’ospedale. Un team di ricerca dell’Università dell’Arizona ha dimostrato che i telecomandi per la TV veicolano enormi quantità di germi e batteri nelle stanze di ospedale, addirittura in misura maggiore rispetto alle maniglie delle porte delle toilette. I patiti dello zapping restano così vittima di potenti agenti immuni agli antibiotici come gli stafilococchi, che contribuiscono alle decine di migliaia di morti dovute a infezioni registrate ogni anno negli ospedali.

Si è scoperto, infatti, che James Garfield (1831-1881) non fu ucciso a causa dell’attentato di un fanatico religioso, ma dalle mani sporche del medico, che causarono una grave infezione che in meno di tre mesi uccise il presidente.
Qualche anno prima, nel 1843, Oliver Wendell Holmes aveva iniziato una campagna per alzare gli standard di igiene negli ospedali. Spernacchiato per le sue idee ritenute fantasiose e prive di fondamento, Holmes non riuscì nel suo nobile intento.
Charls Meigs, uno dei più noti medici statunitensi dell’epoca, rispose così alle proposte di Holmes: "I medici sono gentiluomini. E le mani dei gentiluomini sono pulite per loro natura".

  1. non solo in arizona, ma anche da noi le infezioni ospedaliere fanno da 5000 a 7000 vittime all’anno. a 160 anni dai tempi di Wendell bisogna ancora ricordare a medici e infermieri di lavarsi bene le mani prima delle visite. il primo a intuire la relazione tra infezioni e batteri fu Ignazio Semmelweis che proprio per questo non ebbe una vita fortunata. Come dice Céline nel suo capolavoro, il bene, come il male, prima o poi si paga e il bene, per forza di cose, molto più caro.
