I ragni non sono insetti. Proprio così, potranno anche farvi schifo, ma non appartengono alla famiglia degli insetti. Appartengono alla classe degli aracnidi, che a sua volta appartiene al gruppo degli artropodi, di cui fanno parte anche i crostacei. Fortunatamente di ragni con le chele non si ha notizia. Brr…

Fino a oggi sono state catalogate oltre 40.000 specie differenti di araneae (gruppo cui appartengono i ragni), appartenenti a 111 diverse famiglie. L’apparato buccale, ok… La bocca del ragno non è in grado di masticare, in molti casi la tela tessuta serve a predigerire la preda prima di essere ingoiata.
Lo sterminato numero di specie testimonia quanto i ragni si siano differenziati, adattandosi agli ambienti in cui si sono trovati a vivere. Identificarli non è quindi sempre facile. Aguzzate la vista, perché le specie più piccole misurano appena mezzo millimetro. Se vi manca qualche diottria non disperate, il ragno più grande a oggi conosciuto misura la bellezza di 30 cm da zampa a zampa, si chiama Patu Marplesi e vive in Oceania.

Camminando in un bosco quante volte vi è capitato di ritrovarvi la faccia avviluppata in un sottile strato di setosa tela di ragno? Ebbene, sappiate che meno della metà delle specie conosciute di ragni caccia utilizzando una rete. Molti ragni prediligono una tecnica Zen. Restano immobili e mimetizzati fino a quando non identificano una succosa preda e… Zac! La mordono iniettando un veleno molto concentrato in grado di paralizzare all’istante il malcapitato boccone.
Ora penserete: ecco lo sapevo, quelli mi mordono e muoio! Non funziona esattamente così. Tecnicamente quasi tutti i ragni sono in grado di morderci, le loro minuscole mascelle hanno una sorprendente potenza, ma pochissime specie possono rivelarsi letali per l’uomo. Molti sostengono che per capire se si è stati punti da un ragno basta osservare i segni sulla pelle. Due fori, uno per mascella, sarebbero la prova inoppugnabile dell’avvenuta libagione sul nostro corpo. In parte è vero, ma solo se siete stati morsi da una tarantola o da un ragno molto grosso. Per tutte le altre migliaia di specie di ragno sarà impossibile identificare i due forellini sulla pelle per una semplice ragione: le due mascelle distano tra loro pochissime frazioni di millimetro.

Tarantola Ma allora i ragni sono velenosi? Sì, lo sono. Ma velenoso non significa letale. Quasi tutti i ragni dispongono di particolari ghiandole che producono un veleno in grado di paralizzare o uccidere la loro preda. Si tratta, né più né meno, di un insetticida. Sono numerosissime le prede dei ragni, ma noi fortunatamente non rientriamo nell’elenco. Ricordate? I ragni non possono masticare. Anche il più grosso ragno del mondo non sarebbe in grado di ingoiarci in un sol boccone e non credo riuscirebbe a imparare le tecniche della macellazione per ovviare al problema…
Un numero molto ristretto di ragni utilizza un particolare veleno che può causare qualche reazione allergica nel nostro organismo. Si tratta comunque di effetti molto circoscritti e limitati, di gran lunga meno pericolosi della puntura di un’ape o di una vespa. Solo lo 0,05% dei ragni può causare reazioni gravi nel nostro organismo come forte febbre, vomito, vertigine e, in rarissimi casi, la morte. Rischiate molto di più scendendo le scale di casa…

Già, ma la tarantola? Ok, parliamone. Chiamato così solo nell’Europa mediterranea, la tarantola è in realtà un “Ragno Lupo”, per l’evidente pelosità del suo esoscheletro. A creare una pessima fama alla tarantola ci hanno pensato decine e decine di film. Da James Bond a Indiana Jones non c’è eroe di celluloide che non abbia dovuto fronteggiare almeno una volta il temibile ragno lupo. Balle! A oggi si conoscono quasi 800 specie differenti di tarantola e il veleno di nessuna di esse è in grado di uccidere un uomo. Incredibilmente, rischiate molto di più accarezzando un cane con le zecche.
Nessun ragno può essere definito letale per l’uomo. In Australia, patria di alcune specie di ragni più “pericolosi”, l’ultima morte riconducibile al veleno di un ragno è stata registrata nel 1979. L’Atrax Robustus è indicato come il ragno più pericoloso esistente al mondo. Dal 1927 al 1979 ha causato la morte di 13 persone, ma con l’introduzione dell’antidoto al suo veleno, dal 1980 a oggi non sono state più registrate morti riconducibili a questo simpatico untore. Solo in un caso su dieci è comunque necessario utilizzare l’antidoto. Sarà anche un serial killer, ma fortunatamente fa spesso cilecca.

Vedovanera Terminiamo la nostra carrellata con la leggendaria Vedova Nera. Appartiene al genere Latrodectus e se ne conoscono una trentina di differenti specie. Mentre il maschio di Vedova Nera è molto pacifico, la femmina è estremamente aggressiva. A differenza della maggior parte dei ragni, che prediligono la fuga a qualsiasi altra opzione, la Vedova Nera non esita a scattare e mordere quando identifica un potenziale pericolo. Il suo veleno altamente concentrato è 15 volte più pericoloso di quello dei serpenti a sonagli. La quantità che è in grado di iniettare è tuttavia molto bassa e difficilmente può avere gravi effetti sulla nostra salute. Se ne parla molto, e più di altri ragni altrettanto pericolosi, semplicemente perché è presente in quasi tutte le aree geografiche del pianeta.

Non si hanno prove certe sulla longevità dei ragni, ma si stima che in media vivano un paio di anni. La tarantola, se non viene spiaccicata, raggiunge anche i 20 anni di età. Alcune specie preferiscono al chirurgo plastico qualcosa di più radicale e, come i serpenti, sono in grado di cambiare pelle almeno una volta in tutta la loro vita. Non ditelo ai liftati!
Se proprio volete farvi mordere da un ragno non aspettate l’autunno. In quel periodo dell’anno sono forniti di maggiori quantità di veleno. Ciliegina sulla torta: le api uccidono con una frequenza 20 volte superiore a quella dei ragni. Ma almeno fanno il miele.

  4. Qui ci sono dei ragnetti velocissimi a tessere le loro tele. Della serie: lasci aperto lo sportello della macchina tre minuti e quando vai a sederti al volante ti accoglie il filino appiccicoso. Poi gira tra i locali la diceria (non so se sará fondata) che una razza di ottupedi ha la poco piacevole abitudine di urinare sugli umani nottetempo, provocando un’irritazione che assomiglia ad un eritema solare. Sará vero?

    Sono in vacanza in un antico borgo toscano. Nella casa, presa in affitto, abitavano già alcune colonie di ragni. Tra di esse, la più consistente è una famiglia di tegenarie. Con le lunghe zampe, raggiungono la dimensione di circa 8 cm. Sono tranquille, abitudinarie. Non ci diamo fastidio reciprocamente. Loro sanno dove io vivo, ed io so dove stanno loro. Al mattino le saluto prima che tornino nella loro tana. Le ho fotografate in tutte le posizioni. Le vacanze sono quasi finite, mi dispiace di lasciarle.. soprattutto al pensiero che il prossimo inquilino potrebbe far uso delle ciabatte per risolvere il proprio problema di convivenza con la famiglia degli aracnidi!!

    Mi viene in mente che ho conosciuto una specie di ragno in California che entra nelle case di notte e passeggia sulle pareti fuggendo quando si accende la luce.
    Il morso o la puntura di questa specie di ragno che non so il nome, cambia il gusto a tutto ciò che si mangia, per due mesi facendo sentire il gusto di aceto.
    E una vedova nera viveva dietro il camino della casa di mia figlia, con tutta la famiglia. Un’altra l’ho osservata sul davanti vicino all’aiuola dei fiori che si avvicinava a me se le andavo più vicino di mezzo metro, come mi scostavo un po’, cambiava direzione, poi si è infilata nel buco della sua tana.
    La città di Barstow ha avuto una volta l’invasione delle tarantole, che spavento, le trovavano dappertutto, non so come sia andata a finire.
