Oggi sulla prima pagina del Sole 24 Ore c’è un titolo a caratteri cubitali, “Fate presto”, indirizzato alle istituzioni per darsi una mossa con le riforme e i provvedimenti anti-crisi necessari per tranquillizzare il mercato. La scelta di un titolo molto grande, così tanto grande, descrive efficacemente queste giornate complicate alla ricerca di una soluzione per non andare a picco e mi ha fatto ricordare la faccenda del titolo più grande mai realizzato nella storia del New York Times.
Quando l’equipaggio dell’Apollo XI arrivò sulla Luna nel 1969, quelli del NYTimes decisero di dedicare all’evento la loro intera prima pagina della sera di lunedì 21 luglio. Pensarono di fare un titolo enorme a tutta pagina per testimoniare l’evento, ma con il sistema tipografico del giornale dell’epoca non si potevano stampare caratteri con un corpo superiore ai 60 punti. Per superare il problema, il titolo fu stampato alla dimensione massima consentita e fu fotografato. La fotografia venne successivamente ingrandita per raggiungere l’equivalente di un corpo carattere 96 e fu inserita nella pagina.
Il titolo scelto fu il secco e diretto “MEN WALK ON MOON”, che aveva il vantaggio di essere breve e di permettere quindi di usare dimensioni molto grandi per la titolazione. La scelta fu effettuata giorni prima dell’effettivo arrivo degli astronauti sulla Luna, non erano molto scaramantici in redazione, anche per consentire la composizione della pagina con l’ingrandimento fotografico del titolo.
La prima passeggiata nella storia dell’uomo sulla Luna ha sostanzialmente definito la dimensione massima per i titoli in prima pagina del New York Times. Da allora il corpo carattere di 96 punti è stato usato altre quattro volte: per le dimissioni di Nixon nel 1974 (“NIXON RESIGNS”), per il primo giorno del 2000 (“1/1/00”), per gli attentati terroristici dell’11 settembre (“U.S. ATTACKED”) e nel 2008 per l’elezione di Obama (“OBAMA”).

In questo caso direi che Il Sole 24 Ore miete il terrore al solo fine di vendere più copie, e raggiunge l’ipocrisia nell’angolo in alto a sinistra, dove l’occhiello rimanda a IL MANUALE ANTIPANICO.

Ma qui vorrei dirne due: “presto” , nel vocabolario di base di Tullio De Mauro, è nel secondo reparto, nell’altro vocabolario di alto uso, non è nel vocabolario fondamentale, in cui c’è “subito”. “Fare”, sì, è fondamentale e se usato possiamo avere buone probabilità di essere capiti da chi ha fatto almeno la terza media. Se usiamo solo le parole del vocabolario fondamentale, possiamo sperare di essere capiti dal 66% della popolazione italiana, ma qui il “fare” è superfluo, sarebbe bastato a caratteri ancora più cubitali, l’avrei messo in verticale: SUBITO! Ma, a pensarci un po’, trattandosi del “Sole 24 Ore”, forse a 90 entrava anche: ULTIMA ORA!
