Nel post precedente ho scritto che le nuove mappe di Apple – che hanno sostituito quelle di Google su iPhone e iPad – non sono poi così male, che fanno il loro dovere specialmente nelle indicazioni passo-passo e che sono comunque (ovviamente) perfettibili. Ho proposto qualche schermata per mettere a confronto la vecchia app delle mappe con quella nuova, mostrando che danno sostanzialmente le stesse informazioni, seppure con scelte grafiche differenti. Molti hanno risposto sostenendo che a loro non piacciono, o che in diversi casi non sono così affidabili come quelle di prima, basate sui dati forniti da Google.
Anche dopo aver usato le mappe per qualche giorno e averci passato un po’ di tempo sopra, continuo a essere convinto che il nuovo sistema sia come avevo detto: una buona, migliorabile, alternativa alle mappe di Google. Ma là fuori, specialmente sui siti di notizie di tecnologia, si continua a discuterne molto e sarebbe assurdo far finta di niente. Per poterne parlare con un minimo di razionalità, però, bisogna lasciare da parte tutte quelle obiezioni facili che avevo cercato di sgonfiare nel post precedente. Cose come: le nuove mappe sono brutte, preferivo le altre, i punti di interesse non mi piacciono, sono diverse, le rivoglio come prima. Un problema c’è, ma è più profondo.
Le mappe servono per mostrare in modo semplificato uno spazio e le relazioni tra le diverse componenti al suo interno. Per determinare se sono aderenti alla realtà, e quindi affidabili, di solito verifichiamo le informazioni che ci danno usando come metro di paragone i luoghi che conosciamo bene, e in cui abbiamo imparato a muoverci e a orientarci. Milioni di persone lo hanno fatto in questi giorni dopo aver installato iOS6 sui loro iPhone e iPad, ed è capitato che alcuni siano rimasti delusi perché il nuovo sistema a volte si incarta. Succede, per esempio, con i numeri civici delle vie. Sono disallineati di diversi metri e di conseguenza danno la percezione di avere davanti una mappa poco affidabile.
Quelli di Google ebbero lo stesso grattacapo con le loro prime versioni di Google Maps (a dirla tutta il problema – con margini di errore inferiori – a volte persiste ancora oggi, fate qualche prova): non erano precise perché avevano fatto molto affidamento sui sistemi automatici per mappare il mondo, ottenendo risultati poco accurati. Le cose iniziarono a migliorare solo quando fu introdotto nella ricetta per fare buone mappe un nuovo ingrediente, vecchio come il cucco: l’essere umano. Mettere insieme le informazioni geografiche per le mappe è un lavoro complicato e per diversi aspetti artigianale, che richiede un sacco di controlli e verifiche della qualità del prodotto che viene realizzato. Tutto diventa ancora più complesso se si ha l’obiettivo di mappare il mondo intero. Google lo fa investendoci enormi risorse, impiegando migliaia di persone e avendo imparato da alcuni errori compiuti nel passato. Gli stessi che, secondo molti, sono stati compiuti ora da Apple.
Come scrivevo nell’altro post, la situazione non è così tragica, se si considera il livello di informazioni e di dettagli che danno le nuove mappe. Il problema, semmai, è che ci vorrà tempo per averle migliori di come sono adesso o per dotarle di servizi innovativi (che è poi su questo aspetto che si misura la concorrenza con ciò che ha da offrire Google).
Mike Dobson di TeleMapics l’ha spiegato chiaramente sul suo blog: per dare un servizio migliore, Apple dovrà ripartire praticamente da zero, investendo molte più risorse nel settore che si occupa delle mappe. Dovrà assumere nuovo personale con molta esperienza nel campo delle informazioni geografiche e dovrà mettere anche in piedi un centro di controllo qualità per rendere più accurate le informazioni. Sarà anche necessario introdurre un sistema per permettere ai milioni di persone che usano iPhone e iPad di segnalare facilmente un’imprecisione nelle mappe, come fa TomTom con i suoi navigatori satellitari. (Apple ha un sacco di soldi in cassa, quelli di TomTom, da cui prende i dati per le mappe, potrebbe anche comprarseli.)
Apple ha già iniziato ad assumere nuovo personale, ex impiegati di Google Maps compresi, per migliorare la sua applicazione, e ha risposto alle critiche riconoscendo che le nuove mappe sono agli inizi e che c’è ancora da lavorarci sopra. Il problema, come dicevo, è che ci vorrà tempo e i ritardi su uno dei più importanti e usati servizi sugli smartphone poi si pagano.
ps. In molti nei commenti all’altro post hanno segnalato questo tumblr dove sono raccolti alcuni svarioni delle mappe di Apple. Ma non è che dimostri un granché. Cose simili circolano da tempo anche sul servizio di Google, fatevi un giro sul motore di ricerca cercando “google maps fail”.
pps. Con iOS6 e le nuove mappe, sono anche cambiate le cose per gli sviluppatori, quelli che fanno le applicazioni, con conseguenze poco piacevoli, come racconta Simone Tolomelli.
ppps. Le informazioni sui punti di interesse sono ottenute da Yelp, che non sempre ha dati molto coerenti. Il problema, se non trovate il vostro locale preferito o non lo trovate nel posto giusto sulle mappe di Apple, deriva anche da Yelp. Poi si può sempre discutere sull’opportunità di affidarsi quasi esclusivamente a un simile servizio per avere informazioni su negozi, bar, ristoranti e compagnia.

inoltre google non sarà nelle condizioni di riproporre un’app competitiva (come per l’app chrome che è perennemente scavalcata e penalizzata pro safari)
il punto direi che è sulle politiche commerciali di apple e sulle (pessime) ricadute che esse hanno sui clienti/utenti (potremmo fare lo stesso discorso sull’app chrome)
Ma è previsto che Google rilasci una sua app di mappe per iphone, giusto per fare un po’ di concorrenza?
Ma hai provato ad andare nel “mondo reale” e a chiedere una opinione agli altri utenti?
La mia impressione è che per la prima volta ci siano utenti che sono veramente arrabbiati (beh, la parola dovrebbe essere un’altra…).

Mi permetto di rilevare che il significato di
“una buona, migliorabile, alternativa alle mappe di Google. ” significa che è una peggiore alternativa alle mappe di Google. Solo che non è un’alternativa, ma è una sostituzione. Quindi Apple ha sostituito un prodotto con uno peggiore (meno maturo, ma comunque peggiore), e lo ha fatto perché i termini di rilascio del suo sdk prevedono questa prevaricazione.
Mi sembra che per molto meno (ovvero per aver distribuito come browser di default Internet Explorer e come media player Windows Media Player), l’antitrust americano e quello europeo hanno comminato (e pensano di comminare) multe salate (altro che i bruscolini di samsung) a MS. Ne consegue che o l’antitrust non se n’è accorto o è meno imparziale.
Concordo anche io. Credo che tutti i fighetti del mondo si sono buttati addosso alla nuova applicazione con un atteggiamento del tipo “vedi che ti trovo subito il difetto”.
Per quanto mi riguarda, preferisco le nuove mappe, perché la vettorialità è un vantaggio tecnologico evidente quando si fa uno zoom e la velocità di risposta, incluso il download, è migliore in tutte le circostanze.
Non parliamo poi della navigazione: io trovo l’app molto chiara, poco intrusiva e estremamente precisa, senza ritardi di posizionamento fastidiosi che creano discordanza fra il paesaggio esterno e la mappa.
Dato che l’applicazione è server based, tutti i miglioramenti incrementali alle mappe saranno disponibili quando saranno in linea, senza che io debba fare qualcosa. Quindi evviva le nuove mappe e aspettiamo con fiducia che Apple mantenga le sue promesse di qualità e superiorità tecnologica.
Io vivo al sud di Londra e non è che ‘non trovo il mio locale preferito o non lo trovo nel posto giusto’, io non trovo proprio un cazzo nelle tre vie intorno a casa mia. 3 Pub, 2 barbieri, 2 supermercati, un kebab shop, un ristorante cinese, 3 off licence, tutto sparito. Maps mi dice solo che ci sono una tea room e quattro benzinai che circondano il mio appartamento, inesistenti naturalmente.

Però questo post non ne discute, lo relega all’ultima riga, come se trovare con precisione luoghi e destinazioni su una cartina non sia una delle funzioni principali di un’applicazione che si chiama Maps. Posso veramente usare l’iPhone come navigatore se mi dice che ci sono benzinai ogni 5km?
C’è anche cattiva fede o ignoranza da parte di giornalisti che copiano pedissequamente quanto riportato da siti stranieri.
Un tale Pierluigi Pisa, su Repubblica a proposito degli “svarioni”, fa riferimento ad alcune schermate come questa:

dove si parla di ponte di Brooklyn deforme. In realta è una schermata catturata quando la rigenerazione della vista non è stata ancora completata (in questo caso si usa una tecnica a basso numero di poligoni e con textures a bassa risoluzione).

Insomma, i “google maps fail” non sono neppure comparabili per gravità a quelli di Apple. Una cosa è sbagliare il nome di un parco, un’altra è non segnalare neppure il parco stesso. Per non parlare della qualità di rendering, importantissima al massimo livello di zoom.
Entrambe sono migliorabilissime ma si vede che Google ci ha lavorato per anni.
E poi, magari gli utenti Apple sono tutti straricchi o se ne fregano dei soldi, ma se un prodotto che necessita di 6-700€ per essere usufruito funziona peggio, e anche molto peggio, di uno che è gratuito (o su mobile ottenibile con poco più di 100€), il primo è un fail COLOSSALE. Punto.
Tutte le varie scuse avanzate da Apple o chicchessia sono solo fanboyismi.
Un paio di giorni fa cercavo l’ufficio dove avrei dovuto sostenere un colloquio. Sapevo di essere molto vicina, ma ho voluto provare Maps di Apple: mi ha suggerito una località a 9km (provocandomi un mezzo infarto, dato che avevo 10 minuti per raggiungere l’ufficio…). Un istante dopo, inserendo esattamente gli stessi dati, l’app del trasporto locale (ZVV, Zurigo) mi ha regolarmente indicato l’edificio a 200m di distanza (visibile ad occhio nudo, ehmm).
E’ un pasticcio se ti trovi in un posto nuovo… una volta partivi da casa con l’itinerario di google maps stampato, ora ti trovi come un imbecille in mezzo alla città…

Per fugare i dubbi e le accuse di “fanboysmo” mi chiedo per quali altri prodotti profumatamente pagati ti sentiresti di essere così tollerante sulle inefficienze delle loro funzionalità.

Si potrebbe riassumere questo post con “Sono indietro, ma la cosa si risolve con un po’ più di feedback dagli utenti e con tanti soldini” e non perdere nulla di ciò che vi è contenuto.
Direi che basta per qualificarlo come “post insulso”.
È sfuggita un po’ a tutti un dettaglio essenziale: Google StreetView.
Nel caso in cui non lo sapeste, le auto di StreetView non si limitavano a scattare graziose foto a 360 gradi, in modo che si possa visitare le peggiori vie del Sudamerica comodamente seduti sulla poltrona di casa a Rho, no: raccoglievano un MUCCHIO di informazioni, tra cui dati GPS associati alle vie per rendere il mapping cartografico e fotografico aderente, foto ai numeri civici (tramite algoritmi di OCR) per avere indicazioni più precise sugli stessi, informazioni sui sensi di percorrenza e divieti di transito, reti WiFi per implementare la localizzazione indoor.
Tutte queste cose non si risolvono raccogliendo un po’ di feedback e spendendo milioncini, ma percorrendo milioni di kilometri con auto dotate di sensori GPS. Tanti auguri, Apple!
Quando leggo sfilze di commenti come questi mi viene la tristezza. Ma gente, sul serio, siete in grado di discutere di una funzionalità per smartphone senza assumere toni da soloni scandalizzati che bollano questo post come “insulso” o si inalberano su domande retoriche del tipo “Stai scherzando, vero?”. Non so, davvero, fate qualcosa, rilassatevi, prendetevi una camomilla ghiacciata…
Quanto al tema. Google Maps è certamente al momento un software migliore (e spero che non sia una sorpresa per nessuno…). Da giorni è già stata annunciata a breve la sua nuova App disponibile sullo Store Apple, esattamente come è già stato per YouTube (quindi non stracciatevi le vesti per la morte della concorrenza, non è proprio il caso…). In ogni caso anche Google Maps prende spesso e volentieri delle cantonate macroscopiche, anche su ricerche relativamente semplice (parlo di Milano centro, non di località nel deserto del Gobi…). Quindi insomma, sì, un’applicazione al momento migliore, ma non perfetta. E Menietti ha ragione, per lo più le mappe di Apple (che poi sono anche di TomTom, che probabilmente la metà di voi usa nella propria auto senza per questo violato nei propri diritti fondamentali) fanno il loro lavoro.
Riuscirà Apple a fare come o meglio di Google? Chissà, certo non è per niente facile visto il livello raggiunto da Google, ma vedremo.

Avresti ragione se esistesse un’alternativa. Io non sono pro o contro Apple, non ne ho motivo. Soltanto prima con le mappe riuscivo ad avere informazioni che oggi non posso più avere, neanche se fossi disposto a pagarle. Le elucubrazioni su come saranno le mappe Apple tra un anno o due mi lasciano indifferente, io ne ho bisogno domani mattina. Prima ce le avevo oggi no, per colpa della loro stramaledettissima idea che sia giusto che loro decidano per me.
@Mounier: sei per lo meno strabico, vai cianciando di concorrenza e di tecnicismi che lasciano il tempo che trovano e non ti accorgi che il vero problema è il rispetto dei clienti che hanno comprato il loro prodotto e che oggi si trovano tra le mani delle funzionalità in meno. Magari tra un anno saranno il meglio che esista, ma chi ieri le usava oggi ha avuto un danno. E’ così difficile da capire?
Apple ha un seguito mondiale paragonabile alle religioni monoteiste (ma credo siano molti di più i fedeli dell’i-phone che non gli ebrei). Io detesto le religioni, sono un androidiano per caso, ho uno smartphone per necessità e non per giocare o per esibire agli amici (esibizione limitata al primo pomeriggio, poi bisogna avere un caricabatterie e una presa a disposizione).
Non nascondo un certo godimento, di fronte agli sputtanamenti di Apple. I fedeli oltranzisti saranno sempre pronti a giustificare tutto, rendendosi avvocati a pagamento (nel senso che l’avvocato paga il cliente). A me l’adattatore nuovo che invecchia di colpo gli accessori, le mappe malfatte, l’impossibilità di cambiare la batteria, gli standard proprietari che rendono difficile cose elementari come caricare un mp3 o scambiare un file via Bluetooth, sembrano dei soprusi. De gustibus non disputandum est, resta il fatto che il “valore aggiunto” “coolness” è il fattore numero uno nella scelta di chi sceglie Iphone
