Nel romanzo L’orlo della Fondazione, lo scrittore di fantascienza Isaac Asimov immagina l’esistenza di Gaia, un pianeta simile alla Terra caratterizzato da un ecosistema perfettamente in equilibrio. Ogni elemento che costituisce questo corpo celeste utopico ha una propria coscienza di sé: oceani, fauna, flora e tutti gli altri elementi naturali sono interconnessi tra loro in un continuo flusso telepatico.
Per creare Gaia, Asimov non fece altro che conferire un pizzico di personalità in più a un pianeta che conosceva molto bene, la Terra. Il complesso ecosistema terrestre non ha probabilmente una consapevolezza di sé, ma ha sicuramente la capacità di trasmettere all’umanità, in assoluto l’inquilino più irrequieto che ospita, il suo stato di continuo malessere. Per aiutarci ad ascoltare meglio la cronaca di quella che potrebbe essere la nostra rovina, è nato lo spazio web “Breathing Earth”.

Dunque che fare? Dovremo andare raminghi per il cosmo alla ricerca di Gaia, il corpo celeste perfetto immaginato da Asimov, o saremo in grado di capire per tempo che il pianeta perfetto esiste già ed è quello in cui viviamo? Ma soprattutto, per quanto continuerà ad essere così “perfetto”? E intanto la CO2 aumenta.
